How do I resolve the Invalid NI number error when adding an agency worker?

This article provides guidance to agency users on what to do when you receive the 'Invalid NI number' error when creating an agency worker in Patchwork Agency Manager.

Why is the NI number invalid?

The invalid NI number error will appear, as shown below, if the incorrect formatting for a NI number is used when creating an agency worker in Patchwork Agency Manager.

How can I resolve the error?

  • If adding a temporary or placeholder National Insurance (NI number) avoid using the TN prefix, as this is no longer a valid prefix according to gov.uk requirements.
  • Neither of the first two letters can be D, F, I, Q, U or V. The second letter also cannot be O.
  • The prefixes BG, GB, NK, KN, TN, NT and ZZ are not allocated.

  • The final letter, should always be A, B, C or D

💡There are a number of other criteria that NI numbers must meet to be considered valid, you can view further guidance on these criteria here.
